Got Dirt?

It has been a while since the last post, but patience is a virtue... right?

We are having some issues with funding and how to get donations under 501(c)3 status... but we do have some updates, so read on.

A couple of weeks ago the Mighty Ted and Beth picked up some dirt from All Seasons Mulch Market and Supply on Johns Island. Thanks so much to those guys for the donation! They got the dirt to the garden and filled a few beds.

We also purchased two 55gal barrels for storing water with the hopes of one day using them to collect rain for a more green garden.  I will post pictures later of the fun the boys had climing into the barrels (that were used to store pickles in another life) to secure the spickets. After constructing the barrels, we went over the JIES to plant.

Last Saturday Ted, Beth, Joel, Lenny, Justin, Ellie and their kids, and myself (Emily) all got together and planted all kinds of yummy edibles.  A big shout out to Hampton Park, as they donated a great deal of the seeds we planted.  We filled the rest of the beds with top soil and fially go to plantin'.

Ted had concocted a state of the art layout for each bed using companion planting(great idea!) however he forgot the spreadsheet at home.  Not to worry... he did remember how to layout the corn, beans, and squash. Did you know if you plant pole beans in the same bed as corn the beans will grow up the corn and provide stability for the corn and take away the need for stakes to hold up the beans? For the rest of the beds we just went crazy and randomly planted peppers, okra, tomatos, sunflowers, onions, carrots, and some other things I may have forgotten (like a pumpkin!!).

We are so excited to see the results of our planting! More pictures will come and now we just have to focus of watering the gardens EVERY day.

Lets Get Our Build On!

Hey Guys!

Today, after a bit of planning, we started work on the 3 Squares Garden!!

Ted, Lenny, Joel, and Emily met at Lowes this morning at 9:00 to buy some supplies.  About an hour later with some lumber, nails, screws and weed paper, we set out for James Island Elementary School to build some garden beds. We met Justin, Carissa, Michelle, Ginny, Joanna, the kiddos, and Ryan's power tools at the school and got ready to do some work.

Joel, Ted, and Lenny screwed the first few beds together.  Then, Lenny and Ted abandoned us! They said they were going to get some dirt to fill the beds with, but at the time it felt like abandonment.  Joel and I tested out marriage and put a few more beds together, and when Justin showed up, the three of us finished the beds.

Carissa, Michelle, and Ginny arrived just in time to learn how to load a staple gun! They successfully stapled the weed paper to the bottoms of ALL the beds AND they brought a cooler of water and gatorade to feed nourish the hungy troops.

Just as Joel missed the screw and drilled his finger and the foul language started to form on the tip of his tounge... the Hudsons piled out of the van and Joel held his tounge nicely! Joanna the the kids were super helpful and seemed to have a great time.  The boys helped hammer nails to mark off one foot squares, and they did an excellent job. They even helped Lenny and Ted spread the dirt around the gardens.

So the end result of the day....

6 Beds
2 Beds full of dirt
4 Beds part full of compost

And a whole lot of fun!!!
